These Boho Style Outfits are Perfect for Your Family Photos!

Anyone who knows me knows I am picky about clothing, especially when I'm getting my picture taken. If you are anything like me, you'll love the look of these clothes! There are recommended options for every member of your family. I've weeded through thousands of articles of clothing online to pick highly rated pieces, and while I haven't tried any myself, I have a bunch of them bookmarked for my late summer and autumn family photos! Before getting into my recommendations, however, here are a few tips to get you started as you think about selecting the perfect photo session outfit. 

Tips for selecting the right photoshoot outfit

• Consider your skin undertone. Are you warm or cool toned? Many of the options below are best for warm skin tones, because the autumn palette is itself warm. That said, many of the neutral toned clothing would work for warm or cool toned skin. Furthermore, you can always select a different color for your own photos if it would work better!
• Think about what you have in your closet. Do you have shoes, accessories, or basics that would pair well with an outfit? Do your children already have something that might match an outfit you are interested in? 
• What kinds of clothes are you comfortable in? If you hate dresses, it is often a bad idea to select a dress for a photoshoot. Why? If you feel uncomfortable, you will likely look uncomfortable. Also consider factors such as where the waist falls (it can be uncomfortable if it falls in a location you aren't accustom to), the kinds of sleeves (if you aren't a fan of puffy sleeves, you shouldn't wear them for a photoshoot no matter how trendy), and whether a fabric will be comfortable based on what you like.
• Think about fabric beyond just comfort. Shinier fabrics can be less flattering in photos, as can velvets. Also think about whether fabrics are stiff or flowy; these can make a difference depending on how sharp or soft your features, or how heavy your contrast is. 
• Consider pattern and texture. Busier patterns and textures don't always show well in photos. Additionally, having different people wear different patterns or textures can create a harsh contrast (for instance, one person wearing lace and other wearing a knit sweater with stripes, or one person wearing polkadots and another wearing paisley). 
• Don't wear anything too close to your skin tone, or too close in color to the background where you are shooting. It will make editing more difficult, and you won't look as good in the finished product.
• Limit the number of colors your family wears. Stick with about 2-3 basic tones that complement each other. You don't all have to wear the same color (and complementing colors can actually look better than selecting one color for everyone!). 
• Think beyond the plaid! Forever popular in fall photos, there are so many other ways to embrace the season. Plaid is great (I've worn it in my own family photos), but it isn't the only option. 
• Selecting something you'll wear again is a great way to make a splurge purchase feel worth it. If you don't want to spend a fortune but really fall in love with something that might be a bit more expensive than the rest of the items you like, I suggest not purchasing it unless you can wear it again. Conversely, if you are buying something you think you will only wear once, go with less expensive options. You may not wind up with your favorite piece, but if you think it'll be flattering, it isn't worth spending more just because you like an article of clothing a little more than a less expensive option.

Hats aren't always the best choice for photoshoots; they can cast shadows on your face, and make it more difficult for your photographer to capture your most important features. That said, hats can make amazing props, so if you love a good hat as an outfit finish, be sure to ask your photographer if one might make a good addition to your family photoshoot look!
